Divine Design

Cabinet design is my forte with so many options and details.  This kitchen, originally laid out by the homeowner, who is also a designer, was a prime candidate for the details.

When a kitchen is wide open to the living room, it’s nice to add details to the island.  This island has four square posts on each corner.  It is also 48″ deep with 2 standard 24″ deep cabinets back to back. An X panel hides the seam and adds character.  Since the back side of the island is for decorative purposes, no toe kick was needed.  So we were able to make this piece look more like furniture by designing it without the toe kick and wrapping the sides and back with baseboard.

Since the front of the island is the work space, we left the toe kick and stopped the baseboard at the legs.  In any kitchen design, the work area needs to be comfortable planned.  Keeping a work triangle, with the fridge, range, and sink are important, but can’t always be done.  With this new construction house plan, it was easy to do here.  We also always push to keep a minimum of 42″ in the walkways with a max of 48″.  That is comfortable for more than one person in the kitchen.

I like to keep the cabinets on each side of the range hood equal in size.  The addition of glass doors is a fun way to break up monotony and add a different texture.

I did not have anything to do with the lighting in this home but this kitchen is a prime example of a well lit kitchen with ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.  Under cabinet lighting is great task lighting while a meal is being prepared and also adds dimension why washing the backsplash tile.  Ambient lighting, or general lighting, is dispersed evenly throughout the kitchen.  And the pendants hanging over the island create a great accent while also adding a little more ambient lighting.

This great kitchen design started with a layout and was maximized by the details and materials put together in this divine scheme! The soft, creamy palette, chosen by the homeowner, are in tune with the warm traditional elements in this home and the decor and backsplash pulled a little bit of the farmhouse theme in.
