How to Cut Straight on a Sliding Miter Saw

I have learned over the years that it is VERY hard to find a miter saw that will cut a true 45 degree angle let alone straight when you are cutting large boards. Saw blades all have a little flex in them and the larger the saw blade, the more flex. Here’s a tip: Pull the blade toward you about 1/4″ deep into the wood. At the end of the board, push the blade back all the way through the wood.

If you are cutting through a thick board, make several cuts. Push saw 1/2 way through the wood, and lift up. Pull the blade toward you and make another cut. At the edge of the board, push the blade all the way down and push back to finish your cut.
