The Heart of the Home

From dark and drab to bright and fab — this kitchen remodel was a high priority for these homeowners.  Light and bright cabinetry replace the dark stained cabinets, the appliances were relocated and the dining room wall was opened up.

The unfortunate part of this project is that the plumbing was run through the soffit and the wall to the right of the range.  So we had a few challenges to contend with.

Since we weren’t crazy about the idea of the range being against the wall, we decided to put a cooktop in the the new island and double ovens and the the fridge along the back wall.  The nice long island provides plenty of storage and prep room.

before and after

The previous homeowners used the current dining room as an office.  But since this young family turned it into a dining room, it was the obvious choice to widen the opening as much as possible.

There are several options for the back of the island.  Since this island is long and the back is seen, we dressed it with a frame and door.

The kitchen is narrow and a minimum of 42″ is needed in walkways so there was no room for an overhang on the island.  Instead, we created seating on both sides of the peninsula.  Quartz countertops do not need support unless the overhang is wider than 15″ so we put a dividing panel down the center of the island and a 3″ decorative filler piece of the end.

When you use a custom cabinet maker to build your kitchen, the sky is the limit with design options.  Based on my experience, you will also save money having a custom cabinet company build your cabinets if you have any modifications or special pieces.  If you have cabinet plans from a home improvement center, it is worth having them priced through a local custom cabinet maker.  This kitchen was beautifully made by Louden Custom Woodworking in Harlan Indiana.

If you enjoyed this kitchen, you may enjoy these as well!

  1. Very nice. It’s so freeing to enjoy the space you live in. No matter where we call home, we have to make it ours. Congrats on your kitchen remodel.
